The period from c.10th century C.E. till 14th century C.E. in the Indian subcontinent was a phase when a number of principalities and kingdoms rose to power in different parts of the country, for instance, the Palas and their successors in the east, the Hoyasalas, Cholas, Vijayanagara rulers in the south and the Gahadavalas, Paramaras and Chandellas in the north.

Although being different in cultures, the sculptural art that evolved all over the subcontinent was mostly religious in nature. There was an increase in the number of temples during this period and every temple was decorated extensively with sculptures.

Within the Hindu tradition, although many deities formed the focus of devotional worship, it was the Vaishnava, Shaiva and Shakta cults that were the most popular. In the present exhibition, we will take you to a journey through the finely carved sculptures belonging to this period of Indian history.

A beautiful image of Yoganarayana from Chandella period on display proves both superb carving and concept. The artists who worked under the patronage of Gahadavalas and Chahamanas also produced some extremely delightful sculptures known for their wood-like carvings.

In eastern India, the Pala and Sena artists were also very active. They adorned a number of stone slabs with minute, delicate and jewel-like carvings of figures of gods and goddesses. A few of these sculptures done on dark basalt stone are on the show.

The sculptural wealth from South India from this period becomes even richer. One can see a very rare and well-sculpted image of Kaliya-Krishna belonging to the Hoyasalas that represents the story of Bhagvata Purana where Krishna saves the people of Vrindavan from a poisonous serpent, Kaliya.

Among the large number of Chola sculptures of the 10th-11th centuries CE on display in this exhibition, image of Shiva in Lingodhabhava, Bhikshatana form of Shiva and another of Ayynar Hariharaputra are known for their unique concept and forms.

The Hindu deities’ sculptures from the Vijayanagara period known for clearly defined details and their formal correctness are on the display as well.
