Amrita Kaur

Amrita Kaur is a dynamic singer-songwriter and Sarangi player born in Tottenham, whose music blends "Aretha soul and Punjabi folk," as described by OZY Magazine. Recognized as a BBC Music Introducing Artist and a BBC Asian Network Sound of 2020 Artist, she has graced renowned stages like the Glastonbury Festival and the UN General Assembly.

Amrita collaborates with her father, kirtaniya Bhai Yadvinder Singh, to create heartfelt renditions of shabads in Gurbani Kirtan. Their emotional performances, including the popular "Gur Tar Taranhareya," resonate deeply with audiences. Additionally, she featured in a UNICEF-supported version of Bob Marley’s "One Love" and has composed music for BBC productions.

A gifted vocalist, Amrita's enchanting voice offers a healing and emotional journey, captivating audiences worldwide. Born in the UK with roots in Malaysia, her musical path took a significant turn when her family moved to New Zealand over two decades ago. By age seven, she was already performing alongside her father at local Gurudwaras in Auckland, and by eleven, she began formal training in South Asian classical music under Professor Shukdev Madhur.

While pursuing her Master’s degree in Architectural Studies at the University of Auckland, Amrita creatively merged her passions in her thesis titled "Ragamala - A Garland of Architecture and Music," exploring the visual translation of South Asian classical raags into architectural design.

In January 2023, she made history as the first Sikh to perform a solo concert in Lahore, Pakistan, as part of the "Virsa Heritage Revived" series, which garnered over 700,000 views on YouTube. Following its success, she has been invited back for another performance in January 2024.

Through her unique blend of traditional and contemporary styles, Amrita continues to bridge cultures and promote healing, beautifully merging tradition with modernity across the globe.
