Hindustani classical music is the northern system of South Asian art music, shared across Pakistan and India. Built on raag and taal and carried by gharanas from ustad to shagird, its principal forms are khayal, dhrupad, thumri and the instrumental gat — with qawwali as its devotional cousin.
