Jagjit Singh

Jagjit Singh (1941–2011) was a legendary Indian ghazal singer, composer, and musician, widely credited with reviving and popularising the ghazal for modern audiences. Known for his soulful, bol-pradhan style that emphasised the meaning and melody of poetry, he sang in multiple languages including Hindi-Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, and others across a five-decade career.

Born in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, he trained in Hindustani classical music and rose to fame with the groundbreaking 1977 album The Unforgettable (with his wife Chitra Singh). His memorable film and television work includes Prem Geet, Arth, Saath Saath, and the serial Mirza Ghalib. A Padma Bhushan awardee (2003), he remains one of the most influential and commercially successful ghazal artists of all time.
