Tahir belongs to the Amritsari rababi clan who descended from Bhai Babak ji - the rababi who rescued Guru Gargobind sahib's daughter during the vents of the Battle of Amritsar in 1634. Tahir's grandfather Bhai Chiragh (1885-1958) was the elder brother of the famous rababi vocalist Bhai Lal Muhammad and, prior to Partition, used to perform Shabd Kirtan daily within the inner sanctum of the Sri Darbar Sahib in Amritsar, in the furst duty of the Rababis, beginning around midday, known as Chaunki Amritsarie ki.
