Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan

Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan, a legendary figure in Hindustani classical music, achieved mastery in various forms such as Khayal, Dhrupad, Dhamar, and Thumri. Over his remarkable life, which spanned 107 years, he composed more than 2000 pieces under the pseudonym ‘Rasan-Piya’, becoming a key figure in Indian classical music. His performances included not only well-known ragas but also rare ones, such as Chanchalas Malhaar and Malroon Malhaar, which he interpreted with a deep understanding.

In 2013, at the age of 105, Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan was honored with the Padma Bhushan, making him the oldest recipient of a Padma award, a record he still holds as of 2020. Even in his later years, he remained an active performer and teacher, imparting his vast knowledge to numerous students and keeping the traditions of the Gawaliar Gharana alive. His lifelong dedication to music continues to inspire the next generation of classical musicians.
