Ustad Altaf Hussain Tafu Khan is the son of Khadim Hussain Khan and is among the leading Tabla players of the world. He received his primary music education from his father and his paternal uncle (taya) Haji Fida Hussain Khan. He subsequently became a student of Ustad Mian Qadir Bakhsh of the Punjab gharana.
Ustad Altaf Hussain Tafu Khan is the torch bearer of the Punjab Gharana (tradition) in Pakistan, is a major film music director for Pakistani fims, has composed music for over 700 Pakistani films and has worked with the likes of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Noor Jehan and Shaukat Ali – all Pakistani superstars.
Ustad Altaf Hussain Tafu Khan has explored new avenues in the tabla including improved on the Baaj of the tabla. He is unique in his use of 10 fingers and a fast and crisp playing style. He can also play the Kaangu, Naal, Dholak and Phakawaj.
