Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan is among the legends of Pakistani and South Asian classical music. He lived at a time when recordings of classical music was scarecely done, so recordings of his music are rare if any.
He received his initial music education from his father "Colonel" Fateh Ali Khan, one of the founders of the Patiala Gharana. He could not bring himself to accept the surrogate parenting and training of Ustad Ali Baksh Khan, the co-founder of the Patiala Gharana, and so he ran away to his maternal uncle Ustad Amir Ali in Sindh. He subsequently received his music education from Meharbaan and Sardar Bai, two of his father's students. Sardar Bai's house is where he he honed his talent towards becoming an Ustad.
During his life, Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan was the flag bearer of the Patiala Gharana and a source of inspiration and the teachher for many a musician including Zahida Parveen, Mukhtaar Begum, Farida Khanum and Hussain Buksh Dhaari. He is the father of the legendary Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan and Ustad Hamid Ali Khan.
He passed away in Lahore in 1948 and is buried in Takiya Mirasiyaan - a neighbourhood renowned for music in Lahore.
