Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (Patiala) was born in Patiala, India in 1935. He was the direct descendent of the founder of the Patiala Gharana. He was the son of Ustad Akhtar Hussain Khan who was an accomplished musician himself, the grandson of ‘General’ Ali Baksh Khan, a sublime musician in his own right, and the great grandson of Mian Kallu, the founder of the Patiala Gharana. He was the younger brother of Ustad Amanat Ali Khan and older brother of Ustad Hamid Ali Khan. He was the Fateh Ali of the famed Amanat Ali-Fateh Ali duo who enthralled audiences worldwide.
Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (Patiala) was the flag-bearer of the Patiala Gharana music tradition until his passing in 2017. He was awarded the All Pakistan Music Conference (APMC) Lifetime Achievement Award and long line of civilian honours by the Government of Pakistan. He was also awarded the Hollywood Lifetime Achievement award.
