Ustad Chotay Ghulam Ali Khan (1910 – 1986) is one of the greats of Pakistani classical music and hailed from the Qawwal Bacha/Delhi Gharana. He was born in Kasur to a family of musicians. He received his formal music education from Mian Chajju Khan who was a student of Ustad Buddhay Khan Beenkar (a disciple of the Qawwal Bacha/Delhi Gharana). He was awarded the Pride of Performance by the Government of Pakistan in 1985.Ustad Chotay Ghulam Ali Khan began to sing on the radio soon after its advent in the Pak-Indo subcontinent. He was the cousin of the legendry Ustad Bare Ghulam Ali Khan who stayed on in India after partition.
Ustad Chotay Ghulam Ali Khan’s singing is characterized by the superb use of Taan’s and an immaculate control over the intricacies of the raag. He emphasized taans in his singing and avoided long notes, sargam and taranas in his singing style.
His students include Sarah Zaman, Shahida Parveen, Samina Hasan Syed and the celebrated Muhammad Rafi.
