Ustad Muhammad Hussain Sarahang (1924 - 1983) is one of the legendary artists for South Asian classical music, was the court musician of the last King of Afghanistan Mohammed Zahir Shah and he lived in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Ustad Sarahang was born in 1924 in Kabul in a district known for producing some of the country's greatest musicians. He received his primary education in music from his father Ustad Ghulam Hussain in Peshawar (in British India at the time, now in Pakistan) and subsequently became a student of Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan of Patiala gharana. He returned to Kabul when he was 25 years of age where be became the court musician. He received numerous awards, including the titles of 'Koh-e-Buland' from Chandigarh School of Music - Chandigarh, 'Sar Taj-e-Mausiqi' from Central School of Music - Allahabad, 'Baba-e-Mauqisi' in New Delhi and 'Sher-e-Mausiqi' in Allahabad. He was also regularly invited to perform at the All Pakistan Music Conference in Lahore, Paksistan.
He was a PhD and professor of Music from Kalanendra School of Music, Calcutta, wrote the books Qanun e Tarab (The Law of Music), Mausiqi-e-Raags (The music of Raags) and several articles on classical music for the Pashtun Ghag newspaper in Kabul. He is credited with the creation of Raag Hazra and Raag Minamalee.
