About Raag Pooriya Dhanasari
Raag Pooriya Dhanasari is the great raag of the sunset hour — a twilight melody of the Poorvi thaat, sung as day turns to night. Its scale carries komal Re and komal Dha with a teevra Ma, yet its heart is the fifth note: performers say the breath of Pooriya Dhanasari's life is Pancham, the steady anchor that separates it from its floating cousins Pooriya and Marwa. The mood is tender and grave at once — longing shaded with hope.
Its lineage is documented as far back as the Rag Darpan of 1666, and it carries a proud Pakistani history: the young Ustad Amanat Ali Khan and Ustad Fateh Ali Khan of the Patiala gharana chose Pooriya Dhanasari for the 1949 Calcutta debut that made their name.
