About Raag Maru Bihag

Raag Maru Bihag is one of the great romances of South Asian classical music — a raag of the second quarter of night, widely regarded as the creation of Ustad Alladiya Khan, founder of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. That makes it a rare modern raag that conquered the concert stage: it stands among the most performed raags of our era. It belongs to the Kalyan thaat and blends two worlds — the luminous teevra Ma of Kalyan inside the sweet nocturnal frame of Bihag, with the plain Ma kept only as a rare, delicate touch.

The ascent skips Re and Dha; in descent, Re arrives as a grace slipped in from Sa. Its rass is shringar — love, waiting, the beloved missed through the night. Kesarbai Kerkar carried it from Alladiya Khan's own house to the world, and in Pakistan it belongs above all to Roshan Ara Begum.
